Dr. Frederick Hess
Dr. Hess graduated from Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1966 and has been practicing ever since. He is a wealth of knowledge and experience. After graduating vet school, Dr. Hess worked in Batavia New York, where he worked extensively with racehorses and dairy cattle. Dr. Hess moved to Amherst in 1974 and established his own practice. Over the last 40 years, Dr. Hess has grown the practice to serve a wide area and variety of clients. He specializes in embryo transfer and dairy herd management. Dr. Hess enjoys working with all large animal species. In addition to veterinary work, Dr. Hess enjoys working on his farm in Amherst.

Dr. Rose McWilliams
Dr. McWilliams graduated from Cornell University in 2007 and Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2012. She practiced in Michigan for two years, before joining Dr. Hess. Rose enjoys working with both horses and cattle, and loves the variety of large animal practice. Her special interests lie in dairy herd health, and equine preventative medicine, lameness, and dentistry. Rose is a former Pony Clubber, and worked with sheep before attending vet school. Rose lives in Shutesbury, with her husband Jay, daughter Ivy,  and their Golden Retriever Felix.

Dr. Caroline Barstow
Dr. Barstow graduated from Mount Holyoke College in 2010 and Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2016. She externed with Dr. Hess and Dr. McWilliams starting in 2011 and joined the practice in 2016. Caroline enjoys working with horses, cows, sheep, and goats. Caroline lives with her husband Steven on their family owned dairy farm at the base of Mount Holyoke. In her spare time Caroline enjoys helping out on the farm, hiking, and walking her chocolate lab Moose. Caroline and Steven welcomed a son, Nelson, into their family in October of 2018!

Dr. Sam Neill
Dr. Neill graduated from Wheaton College in 2013 and the University of Pennsylvania College of Veterinary Medicine in 2019. Before attending UPenn, Dr. Neill worked with Dr. Hess and Dr. McWilliams and he is excited to be returning to the practice and joining the team of veterinarians.  Sam enjoys the wide array of large animals and clients associated with the practice.   Dr. Neill enjoys working with all large animals and has specific interest in dairy herd health. Sam is native to western Massachusetts, in his spare time enjoys staying active and the outdoors.

Gail Chevalier
Gail Chevalier is the office manager and has worked with Dr. Hess for the past 20 years. Gail has developed a wide variety of skills, including customer service, accounting, and knowledge of import/export requirements. Gail enjoys both working in the office and assisting the vet's on the road. Gail and her husband Darren own two horses and spend their free time trail riding, hiking, backpacking, and camping.

Sarah Whitely
Sarah Whiteley joined the practice in early 2019 as an Office Assistant. She graduated from Elms College in 2015 with her Bachelors Degree in Business Management. She is currently working on her Masters in Health Education and Promotion through Walden University. Her hopes are to bridge the gap between the health care and agriculture communities through teaching and advocacy. Though fairly new to the large animal industry, Sarah raises Holstein, Jersey, and Milking Shorthorn cows with her boyfriend Ben in Westfield. She especially loves working with the calves and is particularly interested in herd health. ​

Emily Reardon
Emily
Reardon joined the practice in August 2019 as an office assistant and veterinary assistant. She graduated from Stockbridge School of Agriculture in 2015 with her Associates Degree in Equine Management and is currently working on her Bachelor’s Degree in Sustainable Food and Farming with an Equine Science concentration. Emily enjoys working with and learning about all animals. In her spare time, Emily enjoys hiking with her dog, River, and riding!
