Dr. Frederick Hess
Dr. Hess graduated from Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1966 and has been practicing ever since. He is a wealth of knowledge and experience. After graduating vet school, Dr. Hess worked in Batavia New York, where he worked extensively with racehorses and dairy cattle. Dr. Hess moved to Amherst in 1974 and established his own practice. Over the last 40 years, Dr. Hess has grown the practice to serve a wide area and variety of clients. He specializes in embryo transfer and dairy herd management. Dr. Hess enjoys working with all large animal species. In addition to veterinary work, Dr. Hess enjoys working on his farm in Amherst.

Dr. Rose McWilliams
Dr. McWilliams graduated from Cornell University in 2007 and Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2012. She practiced in Michigan for two years, before joining Dr. Hess in 2014 and becoming part-owner in 2016. Rose enjoys working with both horses and cattle, and loves the variety of large animal practice. Her special interests lie in dairy herd health, and equine preventative medicine, lameness, and dentistry. Rose is a former Pony Clubber, and worked with sheep before attending vet school. Rose lives with her family in Shutesbury, and in her free-time enjoys being outside, reading, and cooking.

Dr. Caroline Barstow
Dr. Barstow came to Massachusetts as an undergraduate at Mount Holyoke College from which she graduated in 2010. She went on to graduate from Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2016. She joined Dr. Hess and Dr. McWilliams as an associate in 2016. Caroline enjoys working with horses, cows, sheep, and goats with a special interest in equine geriatric and end of life care. Caroline lives with her husband and two children on their family-owned dairy farm at the base of Mount Holyoke.
Dr. Barstow came to Massachusetts as an undergraduate at Mount Holyoke College from which she graduated in 2010. Caroline enjoys working with horses, cows, sheep, and goats with a special interest in equine geriatric and end of life care. Dr. Gagliardi graduated from Cornell University in 2006 and from Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine in 2022. Dr. Gagliardi joined our practice in November 2022. Annie grew up riding horses in Maine, and then took a detour into linguistic research and around the world before coming to veterinary medicine. She enjoys working with all large animal species and the variety that everyday brings. Annie lives in Shutesbury with her husband and two children. She spends her free time hiking and running in the woods.

Dr. Baillie earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine on St. Kitts and Nevis and completed her clinical year at Oklahoma State University. She joined Hess McWilliams Veterinary Services in 2025 and especially enjoys working with small ruminants. Outside of veterinary medicine, Shannon enjoys hiking with their Coconut Retriever, Winnie, as well as sewing and quilting.

Heather Zebrowski is our office manager and joined our team in March 2020. She also helps with customer service, lab work, and joins us on the road as a very helpful technician. She graduated from Morrisville State College with a degree is Equine Science and Management. She has a strong passion for animal welfare and knew from an early age animals would be a major part of her life. In her spare time Heather enjoys ridding her horses and hiking with her dog Weston.

Amber has a particular love for horses, having owned them since a young age. In her spare time she enjoys show jumping her Off The Track Thoroughbred, playing with her dogs, and spending time with her husband and daughter.

Sarah Vanjura-Roberts
Sarah joined our team as an office assistant in October 2022. In addition to helping in the office, she also helps in the field as a technician for our veterinarians. Since a young age, horses have always been a major part of Sarah's life. This has led to her having an extensive passion for the equine industry. In her free time, Sarah loves to ride and show her horses.
